After taking off from an international destination, a pilot’s flight takes an interesting and strange path.
The most powerful catastrophe pictures keep the stakes and tension high, yet my heart was never in my mouth while seeing ‘Runway 34.’
Partly because the film is based on a true story (the Doha to Kochi flight in 2015 was a success), and partly because it stars an irresistible Bollywood hero.

When an A-lister controls all aspect of a major picture (Devgn is producer, director, and star), it’s impossible for it to have any depth, whether in the creation of characters or the way the story is delivered.
So we know what kind of movie we’re in for: wide brushstrokes, easy to swallow, and a hero who triumphs.
Despite this, Devgn manages to provide a reasonably compelling pre-interval segment, aided greatly by computer visuals and threatening background music, despite its inelegant, underlined sections.

Then it succumbs to the dangers of the second half, crashing into a drab civil aviation courtroom.
The trip begins as usual with customers settling in, their baggage being placed overhead in the cabin, and air-hostesses calming bored guests.
(There’s nearly always one who demands more whiskey as they take off), cabin crew announcements, and some folks are underserved more than others — there’s a Parsi mother-daughter combo, in addition to the bad-tempered spouse.)

Passengers, crew, and air traffic control personnel get increasingly frightened as they watch and cheer for the pilot who issues the dreaded Mayday signal but manages to extract a genie from the bottle at the last possible moment.
Despite the obvious indicators of guilt (partying all night, too many waking hours), he is transformed into a saviour with a photographic memory whose heart is in the right place in his effort to portray Vikrant as a hero.
